Exposure to radiation causes damage to the very small blood vessels in the body and may result in damage of bone, muscle, and soft tissues in various radiation exposed areas.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) was first used for the treatment of radiation damage to the head and neck in the 1970’s and has now been applied to damage of the brain, muscle and other soft tissues of the face and throat, damage to the chest wall, abdomen and pelvis, and has been successful in treating damage to the bladder and intestines due to radiation.
HBOT helps the body form new blood vessels, stimulates tissue growth and elevates oxygen levels in the affected tissues. Nerve fibers uniformly distribute throughout the damaged area and resemble undamaged nerves post HBOT.
Improved oxygen levels in the radiated tissue maintain levels of roughly 80% that of normal tissue and these levels have been sustained for 10 and 15 years post treatment.
Each treatment takes approximately one hour and usually 30-40 treatments are needed for healing radiation damage.
